Open letter to our class

Dear Classmates and Friends,

As you know, Joy (Senda) Lussier is in need of a kidney transplant.  Each day she undergoes dialysis for eight hours, so the need is urgent.

In March I was tested, and the results indicated my blood and tissue type were compatible with Joy’s.  Until last week Joy and I thought she would receive one of my kidneys and with it a new lease on life.  However, last week a test came back indicating the presence of two kidneys stones.  Since I had a kidney stone thirty years ago, I was ruled unsuitable as a donor.

I'm sending this open letter in the hope that someone will take my place as a donor.  Having gone through all of the tests, I believe I can answer many of your questions.  You may be wondering about out of pocket costs; there are none.  Joy's insurance covers all costs.  While undergoing the tests, I experienced no pain, discomfort or embarrassment.  The question of pain after surgery and recovery is usually paramount in most people’s minds. Since the procedure is generally laparoscopic, it means it is minimally invasive with shorter recovery time and much less pain.

So why step forward?  I can only answer for myself, but I found that this was a unique opportunity to help someone. With each passing day I became more committed, and now it saddens me that I cannot complete the journey.  There is no question in my mind that if I could continue, I would.

I am leaving this letter unsigned merely because from the beginning I felt the focus should be on Joy, but if you would like more information including a video describing the tests and surgery, please contact Jay, and he will put you in touch with me.

If you choose to be a donor and agree to go ahead, I'm sure Joy will be eternally grateful for your generosity and Joy has promised to buy the first round at our 50th reunion.
